One of the many features Bungie highlighted in its recent vi-doc unveiling Destiny 2’s Shadowkeep expansion was finishing moves. The company didn’t totally explain how these attacks would work then.
Speaking with Polygon recently, however, Destiny 2 general manager Mark Noseworthy and franchise director Luke Smith outlined how the feature will work. “When enemies get below a certain health threshold, they’re going to have an indicator that means they can be finished,” Smith told Polygon. Players will be somewhat exposed during these animations, which can be customized with cosmetic items much like emotes (though Smith notes players will only be able to equip one a time at launch, but multi-equip and a randomizer are in the works for post-launch).
The reward for pulling these moves off (beyond scoring a quick kill and some energy towards your super ability) can change depending on which mods you have equipped on your armor; Smith cited a mod that would generate ammo for your fireteam whenever you pull off a finisher. This, Smith said, could lead to new approaches to combat as fireteams coordinate which members finish off which enemies when.
The interview mentions the feature is still in development, however, and the intricacies of how it works could change before launch.
